Today is #internationalprimateday so I had to celebrate them with a couple of my drawings of #primates plus I love them so much, it would be rude not to. Chimpanzees being our closest biological relative, share around 99% of our DNA, and the bonobos sharing about 98.7% of their DNA with us, then the #orangutan shares 96.4% of their DNA with humans too. I find them so fascinating, expressive and endearing. Such a wonderful group to draw, with some poses so relatable, plus lots of mischievousness, especially with the youngsters! Primates are so important as they directly contribute to regenerate tropical forest and maintain a healthy ecosystem. The order Primates is one of the most species-rich groups of mammals, third only to bats and rodents. They are a subspecies of the grey wolf. Inhabiting the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, which includes northwestern Spain and Northern Portugal. Due to population controls and damage to live stock, Iberian Wolves were the only Western European subspecies of wolf whose hunting remained legal, until February 2021 when hunting was banned in Spain. Today is #worldelephantday so I am sharing an #asianelephant I was commissioned to draw in pastel to celebrate such beautiful creatures #gentlegiants the largest land mammal, one of the most intelligent animals on earth, that show self-awareness, empathy and complex problem-solving skills, and their incredible social behaviour. #funfacts Asian elephants are more closely related to the woolly mammoth than to the African elephant. An African elephant's trunk has about 100,000 muscles in it! Wow! I'm very fortunate to have seen #africanelephants in Kenya and Tanzania and #indianelephants in Nepal; they have the most beautiful markings. So many stories I could share from our adventures. Celebrating #internationalcloudedleopardday with some #cloudedleopardart The first pic was kindly sent to me with their gorgeous cat in the frame 😍 love it! Thank you again. I always enjoy receiving pics from clients 😘 Absolutely love drawing all cats but these have such gorgeous markings, hard to resist drawing them. I thought these cats were an endangered species, but it says they are #vulnerable on Wikipedia, although with scary information that they are locally extinct in Singapore, Taiwan and possibly also in Hainan Island and Vietnam. The wild population is believed to be in decline with fewer than 10,000 adults, and no more than 1,000 in each subpopulation. Look at what I just found! A #wip waiting to be restarted. So I thought I would share this lovely sparrow for #wildlifewednesday #wildwednesday which I am drawing in pastel. I taught myself how to use pastels. I can't believe it has been well over 25 years since I bought my first lot of pastels, wondering if I could achieve the #finedetail to make it realistic. I just kept drawing whilst working in retail, and got excited to see that there was a progression and that maybe I could achieve my goal. Happy #snowiesunday with a couple of #snowleopards I have drawn. The images include a couple of prints from the originals. The ones in colour I have drawn in #pastel and the #blackandwhitedrawing I have drawn in #charcoal Each one of these I have drawn from my photo reference, taken at @thebigcatsanctuaryuk and @zseabanhamzoo The #snowcat is one of my favourites, with its fearlessness, incredible tail and ability to adapt in one of the harshest terrains. These beautiful cats have been caught on camera at incredible high altitudes, along with the Asian golden cat. I saw this on the documentary about building corridors in Bhutan to help tigers find each other as they are fragmented. Funny enough, the 7th image was a finalist at WAY competition/exhibition run by #dswf along with an Asian golden cat I drew titled Peaceful Moment. This #caturday it's the #wildside of #caturdayart with a couple of #iberianlynx I have drawn in #pastel from @alessandro_uboldi with many thanks to him for the photo reference 🙏🥰 Also on a positive note as Iberian Lynx #lynxpardinus were classified as #endangeredspecies and amazingly are now #vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. They are still at risk due to overhunting, poaching, fragmentation of suitable habitats, and the population decline of its main prey species, the European rabbit especially due to myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease as per Wikipedia. Such an incredible species, the Iberian Lynx, a beautiful cat, fossils even suggest the species has been present in Iberia since the end of Early Pleistocene, around one million years ago so we definitely cannot lose them. I'm back in studio after a great weekend showing my work at Marwell Zoo. Thanks to everyone who made that happen and to everyone who came. As always, lovely meeting new faces and seeing familiar faces, even met some old skool Marwell peeps from back when I started exhibiting there in 1999! Today I just wanted to highlight a couple of invaluable charities I support, and highlight the hardwork and dedication these charities are doing every day to help our local wildlife #britishwildlife that are in need of help, even more at certain times of the year. These charities treat, rehabilitate sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife, casualties, with the aim to release healthy wildlife back into the wild. Please note that bird flu restrictions are in place currently and to always try and phone before bringing casualties to these hospitals. I have been to @southessexwildlife on several occasions, living in the area, and have always been fantastic. I always leave a donation in their box as a thank you 😊 it's a must to help them continue their work, only fair. They cover a huge area, as it is the only facility of its kind in the whole of Essex, London and Kent. They except donations; you can check what they are in need of. We have donated towels and food etc... Another amazing one is situated in West Sussex, @brentlodgewildlife Both have fab websites you can look at. Do check them out. Today is #internationalguidedogday so I've shared a couple of my drawings of a couple of breeds they train to hopefully become a #guidedog and change someone's life. I am proud to say that I have supported Guide Dogs by #sponsoring a puppy since 2004, and use their calendar each year, keeping myself organised. Dogs are incredible and do impressive work every day, so today is tribute to them. Today is #internationalpallascatday so I have to show my appreciation and love of these beautiful characters with a couple of my drawings of them. One is a canvas print from the original pastel drawing, the other one is a drawing in charcoal. I love drawing #wildcats especially the lesser known cats, and cats with such characters as these. This cat is unique, as they have round pupils that contract into small circles, unlike most other small cats that have slit-shaped pupils. This is because they live in mountainous areas and have adapted to see better in low light conditions, very cool hey! Happy Earth Day 🌎💓 I took this pic whilst on a huge hike in Andalusia, Spain, was amazing, with part of the Magnificent 7 😉 friends we met whilst in Nepal. The Caminito del Rey is a series of walks, including an aerial trial built in the walls of the Gaitanes gorge. It is a path terraced onto the gorge with a length of 3km in long sections, also bewn described as the worlds most dangerous walkway. Beautiful landscapes and scenery, we had incredible views! I should have found the pics of the bridge, incredible bridge, work of art, and colour the of the water was beautiful turquoise colour. There are so many beautiful places in the world, even lil gems that we have local that's so easy to take for granted. I am so thankful for nature and all the wildlife around us. The outdoors was definitely a huge influence on me growing up. Just delivered this guy to its #foreverhome 🥰 Who doesn't love giraffes hey...just gorgeous fascinating creatures with incredible eyelashes. Their 18-22 inch long tongues are seriously a force of nature on its own, being a prehensile, meaning giraffes can use its strong muscular tongue to grasp and manipulate objects, amazingly removing leaves, shoots from the most thorniest of plants/bushes/trees. This year, there is even more reason to celebrate World Serval Day as DEFRA have now recommended the banning of the hybridisation of Serval with domestic cats, as well as the import of hybrid cats into the UK, such as Savannah cats and Chausies. It is particularly dangerous for a domestic female cat, especially during mating and during birth. Please sign a petition on the @catsprotection bio page to help them make real change and keep cats like Xirus in the wild. Both #catsprotection and @wildheartanimalsanctuary will be heading to parliament to speak to MP's today calling regulations for cats breeding and ban hybrids. So today's post is the second #portraitart that I can now #reveal with you... The first two images are the photo reference; the first one was the clients image given to me to use as a reference, but whilst discussing commission with the client, we ended up putting a twist on it. Not only did we crop the original photo, we also only included the colour on their clothes, which was really effective. Once it had been framed up, I felt it really made the artwork pop! The black and white parts I have drawn in #charcoal and the coloured clothes I used #pastels This was great fun to create. The title was #handdrawn like yesterday's one, then I used a fine black pen to finish it off. Happy #humpday with some #portraitart I can now #reveal for the #portraitlovers and the #artlovers The first two images are the photo reference; first one is what the client gave me to use, but in the second image, it shows how we slightly rotated the image to make the cottages in the background more level to the horizon, as was slightly off. I loved working on this piece, not only great clients to work with, but there were so many textures within this piece. I especially loved drawing the cottages, so many colours in just that section and again, throughout the whole drawing. Was fun seeing it materialise. I always ask if clients would like to have their title #handdrawn on the mountboard or on the original. It is always a personal preference, no wrong or right decision. I have always enjoyed drawing fonts. I used to do a lot of calligraphy. It is such beautiful writing. There are so many fonts to have fun with.
